Earlier this week I had the opportunity to hold an open forum for students regarding our college budget. Like every community college in the state, we have begun the process of planning for painful cuts. I will admit that I was a bit nervous before the forum. I did not know what the mood of our students would be. My fears were unfounded. We had a wonderful forum which provided a venue for thoughtful questions, informed dialog, and some great ideas.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity to interact with students on a regular basis. It is a distinct advantage over being a president of a larger 4-year institution. When I was a faculty member at CSM I told myself to never forget what it is like to be a student. As president, I am committed to this idea more than ever. You will not find me hiding in my office even though times are tough right now. Stop me and say hello if you see me on one of my regular walks around the Quad.

I once worked for someone that gave me a very good piece of advice. He told me, “There are two kinds of people: those who create problems and those who solve problems. Be a problem solver.” To our students, thank you for asking how you can help with our current budget crisis. In short, thank you for being problem solvers.

On that note, I hope that you will join fellow students, faculty, staff, and administrators in a candle light vigil on Monday, November 23 at 5:00 pm in the Fine Arts Courtyard in front of our Theatre. Help us tell your story and put a face on California’s cuts to higher education. You can find more information about it on Facebook.

I love our students. I am inspired by their amazing stories, the unique gifts that they bring to the college, and their grit and determination to continue no matter what.
