Governor Schwarzenegger delivered his budget update last month.  While I am encouraged by the Governor’s remarks about higher education, I am also skeptical.  I believe that the Governor’s budget is based on estimates that are not realistic.  Thus, I fear another round of cuts to higher education.  These cuts will further limit access to all students.

Last November I had the privilege of working with a small group of faculty who organized our candlelight vigil in support of higher education.  The event was a complete success by all accounts.  I was humbled by the dedication and the work ethic of this group and their absolute belief in our students, our college, and the importance of providing educational opportunities for all.  The work of this group reaffirmed my belief in the power of grassroots movements and the positive change that can occur when we work as a community toward a common goal.  Since that time this group has collaborated with our Associated Students and has organized a “teach-in” at CSM on February 3 and 4 in our Theatre.

This is a peaceful event.  The goal of the teach-in is to educate our students and our community about the importance of higher education, the detrimental effect of our current fiscal crisis on higher education, and what we can do as a community to encourage change.   I hope that you will find the time to participate in the teach-in.  Find out more at: www.Tinyurl.com/CsmBudgetTeach-Ins
