Every so often I get word of a question swirling around campus. These things seem to take on a life of their own. I would like to take an opportunity to clear up a few rumors that I have heard recently:

Governor Schwarzenegger delivered his budget update last month. While I am encouraged by the Governor’s remarks about higher education, I am also skeptical. I believe that the Governor’s budget is based on estimates that are not realistic. Thus, I fear another round of cuts to higher education. These cuts will further limit access to all students.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to hold an open forum for students regarding our college budget. Like every community college in the state, we have begun the process of planning for painful cuts. I will admit that I was a bit nervous before the forum. I did not know what the mood of our students would be. My fears were unfounded. We had a wonderful forum which provided a venue for thoughtful questions, informed dialog, and some great ideas. “It’s time for a frank talk with readers about the Mercury News”. I could not help but notice this headline in the Sunday, September 13 edition of the Mercury News. I made an instant connection with this article, written by columnist Mike Cassidy. It looks like we finally have a budget from the state – for now. However, experts are already predicting another round of cuts by next January when reality sets in once again.
